Steers and bulls are the words used when describing some of the many characters in Ernest Hemingway's, The Sun Also Rises. This form of characterizing occurs due to the actions performed by these characters throughout the entire book.
The Sun Also Rises is a sarcastic story.While steers and bulls are the original idea shows Jake, Cohn and Mike who were the puppet men that lead by Brett Ashley.
It is ironic that Brett wants to stay with Mike for her physical wants, but she cannot leave Jake who is considered as her soul mate. Maybe she is also a victim in patriarchal society and she really wants to chase her own happiness, thoush she is powerless to resist the society.
In the book, The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway, each character followed either the roles of bull or steer. Specially Robert Cohn and Mike, they are two opposite characters which represented the contrast between a bull and a steer.

In life, there are people who are handicapped and cannot find success no matter how hard they try. Sometimes those handicaps are physical and sometimes they are emotional. In The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemmingway, the trials faced by the main characters are similar to the handicaps faced by the bull and matador in the final bullfight. Eventually at some point in life some people who are set for certain things will end up losing just like the "strong" bulls by an powerful force like a matador.

This would pose a problem for any man, but Ernest Hemingway goes even farther to introduce a former lover of Jake's, Brett Ashley, who is engaged to another man, Mike. Based on evidence produced in the book, one could go as far as to say that Brett loves Jake moreso than she does Mike.
