  3. In page 60,"...and she kept and eye on the people of the pesage, and she took great pride in telling me which of my guests were well brought up,which were of good family, who were sportsmen, a French word pronounced with the accent on the men." These words express the person's characteristic of speech.
In page 6,“ I took up the brandy bottle and poured Brett a drink and on for myself."These words indicate the person's action. From the words, i semmed to see a picture and i thought that the man was really upset and wanted to use wine to made himself forget something.
In page 75,"...Nor did I see Robert Cohn again.I heard Frances had left for England and I had a note from Cohn..."These words showed the self-created environment about Jake.

  4. Chapter 7, pg. 59- count said Brett I'm not joking you. I never joke people. Joke people and make enemies. That's what I always say.'' I think this conversation about other people's opinion because cont said he don't like joking people but Brett always joking the people because of that she hasn't a friend in the world.
Chapter 8, pg. 65- Bill said to Jack ''See that horse-cab? Going to have that horse-cab stuffed for you for Christmas. Going to give all my friends stuffed animals. I'm an nature writer. It's about Bill's self-created environment because he said Im an nature writer.
Chapter 9, pg. 75- Javk said to Bill ''We're going fishing in Spain. It's about background.

  5. Robert thinks that Jake is a really great friend but he wont go on the trip with him to strasburg in the begining pg 14,he says "Why go to strasbourg? We could go up to Bruges,or to the Ardennes?, and he gets so upset about what he is feeling, you can tell that his character, is very easly angred and upset by what others say also shown on pg 47 he tells campbell to, "cut the prep school stuff" showing that his character is upset by too much conversation, and if you ask him too many questions he will freak out. Also showing that his character is very self-aware, and only does what he wants, not what others want him to do.

  6. Speech
B: “Why are you going away?”
A: “Better for you. Better for me.”
    B: “When are you going?”
    A: “Soon as I can.”
    B: “Where?”
    A: “San Sebastian.”
    B: “Can’t we go together?” (Hemingway, 62)
From this conversation between Jack and Brett, what Jack expressed is that he is quite dependent on Brett emotionally, at least through the speech. In later chapter, however, it seems that without Brett, Jack lives a more pleased live. Maybe it is just because of the spiritual emptiness, which is what most people who regarded as the “lost generation” shared in common.

    Background
“I did not see Brett again until she came back from San Sebastian.” “Brett was gone, I was not bothered by Cohn’s troubles” (75)
These two quotes simply explained the background of Jack’s situation at that time. After Brett went to San Sebastian, Jack spends the time himself. Comparing to what he outpoured in his previous speech, Jack seems not that

    Self-environment
“I rather enjoyed not having to play tennis, there was plenty of work to do, I went often to the races, dined with friends, and put in some extra time at the office getting things ahead so I could leave it in charge of my secretary when Bill Gorton and I should shove off to Spain the end of June” (75)
This is a piece of self-environment of Jack. Without Brett, Jack lives by himself. He arranges all the daily things, lives his own life, no affect by Brett. Instead of the hard to be apart that he outpoured when Brett said she would go, it seems that he lives a more pleasure life there. Jack has a sense of responsibility. He is willing to finish the work ahead, although that was for the traveling. Instead of hanging out with those who called friends, playing all day, Jack seems enjoy the relative peace more.

  7. SPEECH(pg.57): "Robert doesnt think hes any good, though. some of his frecnh friends told him. He doesnt read french very well himself".
    - This has to do with speech because they are talking about robert speaking a language even though he thinks he isnt really fluent with the language, his friends do.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION(pg. 50): "Hes alright. He says some pretty funny things. Last time i had dinner with him we talked about Hoffen Heimer. The trouble is,' he said, hes a grater snapper. Thats not bad".
-This has to do with physical description because they are describing the characteristics of him and are explaining how he is".

BACKGROUND(pg.54): "Hes got children, and hes got money, hes got a rich mother, and hes written a book, and nobody will publish my stuff, nobody at all! it isnt bad either, and i havent got any money at all. I could have had alimony, but i got it the quicker way".
-This has to do with background because they are explaining two people. One person who is rich and writes books, and the other person who is less fortunate who writes books, but noone ever publishes them.

  8. Background (Pg55): "Brett was gone, I was not bothered by Cohn's troubles, I rather enjoyed not having to play tennis, there was plenty of work to do, I went often to the races dined with friends and put in some extra time at the office getting things.."
This tells us that he is a busy guy who has a lot of work to do and doesn't really like to get bothered from his friends. Moreover, tennis is often consider as a royal sport and this kind of tells me that he is a royal person.

    Speech (Pg17):
RC: "would you like to go to South Africa, Jake?"
    JB: "No"
    RC: "Why not?"
JB: "I don't know. I never wanted to go. Too expensive. you can see all the South Americans you want in Paris anyway."
RC: "They're not the real South Americans"
JB: "They look awfully real to me."
RC: "No; listen, Jake. If I handled both our expenses, would you go to South Africa with me?"
    JB: "Why me?"
RC: "You can talk Spanish. And it would be more fun with two of us"
JB: "No, I like this town and I go to Spain in the summertime."
This tells me that he is very stubborn because even Robert bagged him to go to South Africa with him, he didn't want to go so he was being very stubborn even though he was very good friend with Robert.

Action (Pg 35): "When the taxi stopped I got out and paid. Brett came out putting on her hat. She gave me her hand as she stepped down."
This shows that he is very gentleman because he went out and paid for taxi and also he held her hand while she was stepping out from taxi. It is not a big deal doing that but his action shows that he is very nice to other people.
